Raising the Eyebrow at Snow Leopard
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Snow Leopard has been a huge item in the media lately. After months of media hype and build up, the day it was released, millions of Apple customers flooded the social web, telling everyone of their upgrade. It was all we heard about for days. And I’m still hearing about it.
I’m typically quite an early adopter, but I have yet to make the update.
Why? Here’s a list of applications that I use every day that will no longer function as soon as I update to Snow Leopard:
- GeekTool [resolved]
- Visor for Terminal
- Smart Scroll
- TextMate [resolved]
- Magnifique
- Quicksilver Preferences! :(
I’m a lover of all that is new and wonderful, but some of these applications are essential to my workflow (some more than others of course). I could work around them of course, but I’m so fond of them, I don’t really want to switch. Not to mention I’ll mention my custom icons and theme.
Hopefully all of these issues will be fixed soon. As soon as they are, I’ll be able to fully enjoy these features:
<ul>
<li>Google Contacts & Calendar Support!!!</li>
<li>Exchange!</li>
<li>Context-sensitive Menus</li>
<li>Python 2.6 is bundled (with easy_stetup!!!)</li>
<li>All of those great Dev API’s (like grand central)</li>
</ul>
<p>I love that fact that on any install of Snow Leopard, if I want to install some new libraries, all that I will have to do is type:
1 | sudo easy_install libraryname |
Of course, I can do this just fine right now. But how awesome will it be to do that out of the box?</p>
Life couldn’t be sweeter. I can’t wait!
Actually, ‘easyinstall’ should be part of your Leopard installation too:
% pkgutil –file-info /usr/bin/easyinstall
volume: /
path: usr/bin/easy_install
pkgid: com.apple.pkg.BSD
pkg-version: 10.5.0.1.1.1192168948
install-time: 1223987461
uid: 0
gid: 0
mode: 100755
….
And you didn't install it?
I installed Snow Leo and next applications work for my 64bit(for 32 bit all works as for 10.5)
* GeekTool(64 bit)
* Visor for Terminal(32 bit only)
* TextMate (64 bit)
Textmate has been repaired now (yay!).
Which release of visor are you using?
thanks for the update on geektool! id didn't know that there was a 64 bit version.
?? QuickSilver b56a7 works and TextMate had one shortcut key that wasn't mapped correctly, which they released a patch right before Snow Leopard officially came out. I would hardly say these programs would “no longer function” if you upgraded.
I start Terminal in 32 bit mode(in Get Info check) so Visor starting normaly, but often Visor in this mode got broken :(.
thanks to you, I did not use this awesome tool before ))
Yes, textmate is now a resolved issue. There are still a few issues regarding bundles however.
I'll be posting a screenshot of my desktop all geektooled out in a few :P
